Winter is one of the most beautiful times to travel. The snow-covered mountains, crisp air, and the endless reason to enjoy hot cocoa make up the perfect formula for a winter getaway. There are many places that are spectacular in wintertime, but these destinations stand out from the rest. From skiing resorts, to historic towns, to stunning lakes, you will not be disappointed by any of these options.

Vail, Colorado

The first destination is Vail, Colorado. Condé Nast Traveler readers voted this town the most popular ski resort in America and it’s easy to see why. There are over 200 kilometers of trails that wind through five mountain peaks so your winter adventure is full of beautiful scenery. The surrounding area has everything from hiking paths to horseback riding to shopping.

Sleeping Bear Dunes in Michigan is the next destination on our list. This area was named the most beautiful place in America by Good Morning America and it can’t be denied. There are over 70 miles of trails to explore where you will see everything from glacial grooves and ancient forests to the famous dune climb. If you want to stay overnight, there are several resorts and campgrounds in the area.

Lake Tahoe is located on the border of California and Nevada. This picturesque lake has snowy mountains surrounding glistening blue water and a town full of shopping and dining. There are several trails to explore ranging from easy walks for the whole family to challenging hikes that will take all day. This is a beautiful spot year round, but especially so in the winter season.

This mountain stands at over half a mile high and is the most topographically prominent peak east of the Mississippi River. You can choose from a number of trails to hike ranging from easy walks for the whole family to challenging hikes. You also have the option of skiing or snowboarding down the mountain for a real exhilarating experience.

Lake Placid, New York may not be the first spot you would think of for a wintertime getaway, but it’s stunning nonetheless. This town was home to both the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, so you know it is a wonderful place to visit. There are tons of trails for skiing, snowboarding, or hiking-even in the summertime. You can try your hand at ice fishing or go dog sledding on Lake Placid all while enjoying the beautiful views.

There are great dining options from fine cuisine to family style restaurants perfect for a fun day with friends and family alike. They are also known for their farm to table food scene.

Gettysburg is the perfect place to visit in winter if you love history. This town has so much historical significance, and learning about it on a tour will give visitors a deeper appreciation and understanding of America. This park has so much to offer-from climbing opportunities at boulders or stunning rock formations to scenic views and hiking trails. Fairbanks is another great wintertime destination in Alaska. This town has a lot to offer from shopping and dining options to outdoor activities such as dog sledding, snowmobiling or visiting the Ice Museum. You can take a tour of one of Fairbanks’ many museums ranging from history to art.

Whitefish is known for its skiing, but there’s so much more to do here. This town has plenty of shopping and dining options-most with a western flair perfect for everyone. There are amazing hiking trails throughout the area that range from easy walks through forests or challenging hikes along mountain peaks; no matter what you choose it will be an adventure.

If you want to escape the cold, Hawaii is the perfect destination for you to help keep summer alive. Maui has tons of shopping and dining options-not to mention gorgeous beaches that are great for laying out, playing in the sand or surfing.
