Geocaching is super fun and exciting. It’s a world-wide phenomenon with thousands of participants all over the globe. If you’ve been a fan of geocaching in the past but have been out of touch for a while then you might be wondering – is geocaching still a thing?  

Yes, it most definitely is. There are over 3 million geocaches worldwide. That is plenty of treasure to be found right there. Moreover, geocache events are still taking place a world wide to keep up the spirit of geocaching aflame.

If you have just found out about this activity and are wondering if it still a thing now, you can rejoice. It is still a thing and is very popular. Even during this pandemic in some states, it can still be done. 

What you need to keep in mind though is you need to maintain all the rules and regulations to be safe while doing it. Some states allow their residents to leave the house If there is a need or for solace. So, check in with your local laws. But in general, geocaching is still a thing. 

Various world events are still being placed with thousands of people participating worldwide. So, you can say for certain that geocache is still going strong.

Geocache lovers can rejoice. The hunt will go on since there are still quite a lot of geocaches in the US. All of these are active caches too. Currently, there are about 400,000 geocachers. That is quite a large community.

As for geocaches go, the number stands strong at 3569. That is not a number to scoff at. So, you and your friends will not have any trouble finding these caches if you want to. Speaking of finding the caches, there are some fantastic places you can go for hunting.

One of the best parts of the hunt for a geocache is you can travel to new places. Some of these destinations are truly great and when you add treasure hunting to the mix, you are in for a treat. Here are 7 geocache destinations you need to look out for. 

  • Nevada

Reno is a city in Nevada. It is a beautiful city and is also known as the ‘biggest little city in the world’. There are already great destinations for geocaching in the US. But if you are looking for a special trip for treasure hunting, Reno should not be missed. 

There are many hikes in reno. The best part is there is something for everyone. You can either go for urban hunting or in hunting in nature too. 

  • Washington 

For people living in Washington, Seattle is a place to be. Keen eyed among you will notice the city is also where the 20th anniversary will be held as well. If you have been planning a trip already, why not pack your bags, put your treasure hunting caps on and book a flight to Seattle? 

  • South Africa

Let’s venture outside of the USA now. Port Elizabeth in South Africa is a place of sandy beaches. You will find it on the eastern coasts of South Africa and is also thriving with art and music. It is called the ‘friendly city’.

With a nickname like that, you cannot miss an opportunity going there. If you want a holistic geocaching experience Port Elizabeth is the place. You can relax a bit and also go treasure hunting. 

  • Macao 

If you are big on exploring new cultures, Macao, on the south coast of China, is another cool destination. There are some virtual and earth caches in the beautiful city of Macao. Plus, there is a rich culture to be explored there as well.

  • Australia

Fifth on our list is Australia. Well, Canberra in Australia to be specific. This one also offers a wide range of experiences for geocachers. You can either hike or also do some urban geocaching. That isn’t all though. 

There is also some great food you can enjoy and lots of cool architecture to be taken in. It is sheer beauty. When you think about it, this is one of the allures of geocaching. Not only do you get to have an adventure and travel places in search of treasure, but there is just so much more to do. 

You can try out the food of the place you visit, experience the local culture and maybe even meet some new people along the way. No one can complain about that, now can they?

  • Germany 

A medium-sized historic city named Reutlingen in Germany, not only has some of the narrowest roads in the world but is also home to dozens of geocaches. There are different sizes of geocaches you can hunt for too.

Whether you are hunting big treasures or small, Reutlingen has 100 or so great locations and spots for some cool treasures hunting goodness. 

  • Brazil

Last but certainly not least we have Brazil. If you find yourself in Brazil for geocaching, Sao Paulo is where you would want to be. The great thing about geocaching in Sao Paulo is the adventure and exciting travel destinations. 

There are famous parks like Ibirapuera and other great places. You can also visit some theaters and enjoy some delicious food in top-notch restaurants over there. I cannot mention Sao Paolo without mentioning this is also your way to complete the Mission: 4 Southern Bowl A.P.E Cache challenge. 

As you can see there are a lot of places you can visit around the world for geocaching. There are many in the US alone. So, whether you want to make an adventure right here in the states or travel around the world, you have the option for both. At the end of the day, the choice is yours.

Nothing is for certain, but the community is still going strong. There are over three million active geocaches hidden worldwide and new caches are constantly popping up. Also, globally people are becoming more drawn to outdoor activities to take a break from the monotonous tech ruled life we are currently accustomed to. Now, people are just more eager to head out and experience life. 

If this trend keeps up then we can say that geocache is here to stay for a while. But for now, all we can do is hope and enjoy as long as it lasts. 


So, is geocaching still a thing? It most certainly is. The community is becoming larger and is stronger than ever. So, if you are still interested in getting into it or getting back to it then now is the time. There are tons of geocaches to find and you can even hide your own caches as well. So, what are you waiting for? Head out and start hiding some geocaches of your own or go on an adventure to find some. 

It doesn’t matter whether geocache is popular or will it stay popular in the coming years. What matters is that there are caches out there waiting to be found. So, if your inner treasure hunter is yearning for a good treasure hunting adventure then head out now.
